Cognitive behavioral therapy
Within the framework of CBT, the therapist and client work collaboratively to develop an understanding of presenting problem(s) and to develop a treatment strategy. Through exercises in the session, and the occasional “homework” exercise outside of sessions, individuals are helped to develop coping skills, whereby they can learn to change their own problematic thinking, emotions and behavior.
CBT is based on the following core principles:
Psychological problems are based, in part, on faulty, unhelpful, or unhealthy ways of thinking.
Psychological problems are based, in part, on learned patterns of unhelpful behavior.
People suffering from psychological problems can learn healthier ways of coping with them, thereby finding symptom relief and becoming more effective in their lives.
